I think one of the greatest lessons of early childhood is learning to share. However, it’s a concept that tends to come and go as we grow and whither we like it or not, it needs a little tweaking from time to time in adulthood.
At the beginning of 2007 I made a “New Year’s Resolution” to be more generous. I prayed that God would send situations my way, so that I could practice. He did and I did.
I learned a lot about myself in the process. On the downside, I still have the urges of possessiveness and selfishness and I don’t like it. On the upside, it wasn’t that sharing was hard, once I recognized the opportunities, it was surprisingly easy. My problem was with my eyes. So many opportunities slipped past me and I feel cheated because of it.
I discovered first hand that learning to be a giver forces us to get with people, to share, to open our eyes, to see beyond our vision. Remember, I resolved to be more generous, prayed that God would send opportunities , and I gave. But, I got more than I gave… I got new friends, new passions, new dreams, new insights. I connected with people and grew richer for it. Strange isn’t it. I think this generosity thing has only just begun.
