Garrett reminded me of my calling

October 29, 2007

People who are afraid tend to take their trunk hugging very seriously; they refuse to listen to the possibilities of life beyond their fear and they generally refuse to own-up to their fear. Most of the time the trunk hugger’s fear is covered by demands, outbursts, and put downs. They can talk about climbing skills and tell you about Tarzan, but until someone shows them how to take the next step they will remain comfortably unwilling to venture beyond thimg_0131.gifemselves.

My faith calling is to the adventure of “showing the way.” How about you? Not easy is it.

Living in the age of speed

October 15, 2007

I just finished an interesting book by Vince Poscente titled, The Age of Speed. It’s a quick read…ha ha. I was challenged and forced to rethink my preconceptions about schedules and calendars and the speed of life.

When I started reading I was convinced the thing we all needed to do was to hit the brakes and slow down a bit. But now… maybe that’s not exactly the counsel to give. Vince makes the point that: “No matter how fast we think we’re going, it seems harder and harder to dedicate time to the things we feel are significant…” then he says, “I blame this problem partly on the outdated framework we use to delineate and organize our time. We define our time in discreet segments–work, home, and leisure–but that’s no longer accurate.”

The reality is that most of us deal with a constant overlap and unclear priorities. Work he says is not a place, it’s a state of mind and instead of three segments of time, we have one large pie of time filled with a constantly morphing mixture of work, home, and leisure.

In other words: Time is out of the box. Enjoy it, don’t fear it. Deal with it… embrace it… set your priorities and go for it… speed is not the enemy; distraction, uncertainty, and boredom may be.

Isn’t life-long learning great? I like reading books that challenge my perspective and force me to re-think what I’ve always thought. I’m finding myself reading more and talking less these days… I think that’s good for now.
